Additionally, we are looking for members to join our committees, where you can play a hands-on role in various aspects of our organization, for example finance and fundraising initiatives.

LAWS is seeking applications from candidates to serve on the Board of Directors for the following positions:

  • Chair
  • Treasurer
  • Director (HR Portfolio)
  • Director (Fund-raising Portfolio)

The LAWS Board is comprised of nine directors. Director terms are for two years.

Director Responsibilities:

The Board of Directors is the legal authority for LAWS. As a member of the Board, a director acts in a position of trust and is responsible for the effective governance of the organization. The main Board duties are:

  • Govern LAWS by the policies and by-laws developed by the Board.
  • Establish overall long and short-term goals, objectives and priorities for LAWS in meeting the needs of our community.
  • Promote the mission of LAWS through community networking, etc.
  • Adopt a pro-active, non-partisan and positive stance on sharing the impact of LAWS’ work in our community.
  • Ensure accountability for services provided and funds expended.
  • Monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of LAWS through the regular review of programs and services.
  • Participate in the cultivation of donors and supporters (may include thanking donors, participating in fundraising events, etc.).
  • Ensure succession planning for the organization.

Meetings are the second Wednesday of the month, 4:30pm - 6:30pm - in-person or via Zoom (breaking for July & August). Directors typically spend eight to ten hours per month for LAWS Board service. Directors may also serve on one committee, which will typically require an additional two hours per month.

Candidate Requirements

Qualities sought in candidates are:

  • A commitment to the vision, purpose, mandate, and goals of LAWS.
  • A keen interest and passion for animals and animal welfare.
  • Ability to work effectively within a team environment.
  • Strong communication skills.
  • Experience working with non-profits/charities, ideally on a board or committee

In particular this year, LAWS is looking for candidates with strong leadership skills, financial acumen, fund-raising and HR backgrounds. Technical specialists (Vets, RVTs) are also encouraged to apply.

Recruitment Timelines

  • Application deadline is April 30, 2024.
  • Short-listed candidates will be notified by May 4, 2024
  • AGM for Director elections will be June 12, 2024
