Celebrating the Heart of LAWS: Volunteer Appreciation BBQ 2026

It’s a long-standing tradition at LAWS to thank volunteers with a spring barbecue party during Volunteer Appreciation Week. This year, we took it a step further, opening the celebration to the wider community and turning the day into something even more special.

The truth is simple: we couldn’t do this work without our volunteers. Every day, they show up with time, energy, and care—socializing cats, cleaning, fostering vulnerable kittens, supporting events and education, maintaining our grounds, running the thrift store, and so much more. The scope of what they contribute is remarkable. As a non-profit animal shelter that receives no government funding, their support is not just appreciated; it’s essential. Because of them, we’re able to provide quality care to hundreds of animals in need each year.

This year’s BBQ, held on Sunday, April 26, 2026, was a chance to recognize that generosity, while also celebrating the wider community that stands behind it.

We’re incredibly fortunate to have the support of local partners who helped bring the day together. Tyrone and Lauren from The Vine took charge of the grill, continuing a partnership rooted in community care. Through their work hosting community meals, we’ve been able to collaborate in supporting local pet owners with food and supplies during difficult times.

Brad and April from The Nutty Bean Café in Lakefield helped us round out the menu with hot wraps, treats, and excellent coffee. Volunteers were also treated to beautiful flowers from Griffin’s Greenhouses (our neighbours just up the road), and live music from Jake Dudas set the tone for a relaxed afternoon of good food, games, and conversation.

We were also joined by a wonderful group of artisan vendors:

  • Emily Johnstone, Ems broideries
  • Gail West, The English Potter
  • Jessie Powell, Cheesecrafts
  • Kate Powell, Kapow Studios
  • Krissie Bois, Two Krafty Chicks

And we’re grateful for the event support that helped make the day run smoothly:

  • Everwillow Event Rentals
  • Bouncers R Us

At its core, our work at LAWS is about supporting both people and pets in our community. “This day meant so much,” says Lyndsay Lisson-De Ell, Director of Operations at LAWS. “Our volunteers are at the heart of everything we do, and being able to celebrate them alongside our community was so special. It was such a beautiful day, and having our community partners show up to celebrate with us made it one of my favourite days of the year.”

The 2026 Volunteer Appreciation BBQ reflected the spirit of our mission fully; it was a coming together of volunteers, local businesses, and community members, all connected by a shared commitment to care.

To our volunteers: thank you. You are the heart of LAWS, and this celebration was for you.
